You Perform Worse
Than You Train

The technique that was there all week goes missing on match day. It is the most common complaint in sport, and the most misunderstood — because the problem is almost never the skill.

Athletes perform worse under pressure because the stress response narrows attention and turns it inward. Well-learned skills normally run automatically. Monitoring them consciously disrupts execution — the effect commonly called paralysis by analysis. The skill has not been lost; the conditions for running it have changed.

An athlete told me recently that he had "forgotten how to strike a ball" during a cup match. He had been striking it cleanly for eleven years, including the Thursday before. Nothing had been forgotten.

What had changed was the state he was executing in — and no one had ever trained him for that state.

What pressure actually does

When a situation registers as high-stakes, the body prepares for threat. This is useful in the abstract and awkward in the specific. Three things happen at once that matter for performance.

That third one deserves attention, because it is where the "forgot how to strike a ball" experience comes from.

Why thinking about it makes it worse

A skill you have drilled for years runs without conscious supervision. You do not decide where to place your standing foot; the movement executes as a unit. That automaticity is what expertise is.

Under pressure, athletes start supervising. They think about the standing foot. They check the follow-through mid-swing. Attention that belongs on the target lands on the mechanics — and a movement that ran fine as one automatic unit gets broken into parts and executed consciously, badly.

This is why "just concentrate harder" is such poor advice. The athlete is already concentrating. They are concentrating on the wrong thing, and being told to try harder pushes attention further inward.

The skill did not disappear. Attention moved to where the skill cannot survive being watched.

How to reset after a mistake

The single highest-return skill in competition is not avoiding mistakes. It is shortening the time between a mistake and the next committed action.

Untrained, that gap runs to minutes — an athlete concedes, then spends the next quarter of an hour replaying it while play continues without them. Trained, it takes seconds. This is the protocol I teach; it is deliberately short, because anything longer will not survive live competition.

  1. Mark it. One physical cue — adjusting a strap, tapping a glove, a single clap — signalling the mistake is closed. The specific action matters far less than using the same one every time.
  2. Breathe out longer than you breathe in. One breath, exhale longer than the inhale. The longer exhale engages the parasympathetic response and starts lowering arousal within a single cycle.
  3. Name the correction, not the error. A few words of instruction — "follow through", "step across", "earlier". Replaying the error keeps attention on it. Naming the correction points forward.
  4. Find your external cue. Move attention to something specific outside your body: the ball, an opponent's hips, a line on the pitch. This is the step that reverses the inward turn.
  5. Commit to the next action. Next ball, next stride, next call. The reset is not complete until normal execution resumes.

The whole sequence should take a few seconds. And it has to be practised in training — a routine invented during a cup final is not a routine, it is a hope.

Why routines are not superstition

Athletes are often defensive about pre-performance routines because they have been told the routine is a superstition. The distinction is straightforward.

A superstition holds that an action influences the outcome by itself — the lucky socks win the match. A pre-performance routine works through the state it produces: consistent arousal, consistent attention, consistent entry point into performing. The mechanism is the state, not the luck. That is why the routine is worth building deliberately rather than accumulating by accident.

Training for pressure, not hoping for it

The reset above is a skill. Like any skill, it is only available in competition if it has been rehearsed enough to run without deliberation — and rehearsing it in a calm Tuesday session is not sufficient, because the state it is meant to work in is not present.

The training principle is to raise pressure deliberately in practice:

None of this removes pressure. The goal is not an athlete who feels nothing on match day — that athlete does not exist and would not perform well if they did. The goal is an athlete who recognises the state, has a trained response to it, and gets back to executing faster than the athlete across from them.

When this needs more than a protocol

A reset routine handles in-competition errors. Some things it does not handle, and it is worth being clear about which.

Persistent hesitancy after an injury is a different problem — that is the nervous system protecting a body part it learned to guard, and it needs graded work rather than a breathing cue. Anxiety that shows up away from sport, affects sleep, or does not respond to performance work belongs with a qualified clinician, not a performance coach. Mental performance coaching complements clinical care; it does not replace it.

For everything inside its scope, the pattern is consistent: these are trainable skills, and most athletes have simply never been shown that they can be trained. That is what the mental performance coaching programme does over three months — with real competition in between sessions to apply it to.

A few seconds. The purpose of a trained reset routine is to shorten the gap between a mistake and the next committed action from minutes to seconds. Untrained athletes commonly lose the following several minutes of play replaying the error.

Are pre-competition routines superstition?

No. A superstition is a belief that an action influences an outcome by itself. A pre-performance routine works by putting the athlete into a consistent physical and attentional state before performing — regulating arousal and directing focus. The mechanism is the state it produces, not luck.

Can composure actually be trained?

Yes. Composure is a set of trainable skills — arousal regulation, attention control and a rehearsed reset routine — not a fixed personality trait. It is trained by practising those skills under deliberately raised pressure in training, so competition is not the first exposure.

What if nerves affect me away from sport too?

That is outside the scope of performance coaching. Anxiety that affects sleep, daily life, or does not respond to performance work should be discussed with a qualified clinician. Mental performance coaching can run alongside clinical care but is not a substitute for it.
